Traffic flows along a divided highway lined with trees, the kind of commuter route Ladson car accident lawyers ask about

Ask three neighbors with Ladson mailing addresses which county they live in, and you could hear three different answers. The ZIP code 29456 reaches into Dorchester, Berkeley and Charleston counties. That is why Ladson car accident lawyers begin with the exact spot of the wreck. The county line at that spot decides who wrote the report and makes that county one place a suit can be filed.

Ladson itself is an unincorporated census-designated place, a statistical area the Census Bureau defines where no town government exists. At the 2020 Census, its 15,550 residents lived in just two counties, with 12,560 in Berkeley and 2,990 in Charleston. None lived in Dorchester. A crash inside that boundary is therefore a Berkeley or Charleston County matter, while a Ladson mailing address outside it may sit in Dorchester. The nearest cross street is worth writing down.

Frost Law Group belongs to two Summerville attorneys, Jack C. Frost and Tara L. Frost, who handle injury claims from both sides of the Berkeley and Charleston county line. Tara's courtroom perspective comes from the Dorchester County magistrate bench, where she served from July 2022 to August 2025. That service taught her how judges weigh preparation and credibility. Calls to the office go straight to Tara or Jack instead of a call center.

Ladson Car Accident Lawyers and the Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester County Question

Placing the crash on a map comes before anything else. Frost Law Group can start a Ladson claim with the street, the nearest cross street and the side of any county line where the vehicles came to rest. The Census Bureau built its 2020 Ladson boundary from 191 census blocks. Of those, 147 blocks holding 12,560 residents lie in Berkeley County, and 44 blocks holding 2,990 residents lie in Charleston County.

That works out to roughly 81% Berkeley and 19% Charleston by population. Land follows a similar split, with about 13.75 of the community's 18.2 square kilometers in Berkeley. The 2020 count also found 5,691 housing units. No 2025 estimate exists for Ladson, so the 2020 count remains the latest figure. Not one Dorchester County block falls inside the census-designated place, yet Dorchester questions still come up, because the ZIP code does not follow the census line.

The Census Boundary Versus the 29456 Mailing Address

The Census Bureau approximates each ZIP code with a ZIP Code Tabulation Area. For 29456, that area held 37,577 residents at the 2020 Census, more than twice the population of the census-designated place. Its residents split three ways, with 16,176 in Dorchester, 12,275 in Berkeley and 9,126 in Charleston. Dorchester County's own list of unincorporated communities includes Ladson, which fits the ZIP area rather than the census boundary.

Route Numbers on a Report That Point to a County

SCDOT's inventory gives Ladson Road one number on each side of the Dorchester and Charleston county line, S-230 and S-76. College Park Road is S-62 in Berkeley County, yet SCDOT's Charleston County file uses S-62 for Montague Avenue. So a route number helps, but it is one clue among several. An address such as 9850 US Highway 78 falls inside the Ladson census boundary in Charleston County, per the Census Bureau's address lookup, so US 78 crosses that part of the community.

Does a Ladson Address in Dorchester County Change the Claim?

It can change nearly every office involved. On the Dorchester side, deputies from the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, or troopers from the Highway Patrol's Post B, may write the report. A lawsuit could then be filed in the First Judicial Circuit rather than the Ninth. That circuit's Dorchester County courthouse is in St. George. In 2024, the Highway Patrol investigated 1,517 Dorchester County collisions and the Sheriff's Office 590. Frost Law Group handles Dorchester County crash claims as well, so a Ladson address on that side still reaches the same two attorneys.

Ladson Road, College Park Road and I-26 Crash Questions for a Ladson Auto Accident Attorney

Ladson Road carried an estimated 50,100 vehicles a day in 2024 on its Charleston County stretch, from the Dorchester County line to US 78. On the Dorchester side, the S-230 segment from Dorchester Road to the Charleston County line carried 34,800. One road, two route numbers and two county record systems all meet along that line.

College Park Road runs as S-62 in Berkeley County. SCDOT's 2024 Berkeley County traffic counts put it at 37,000 vehicles a day between Crowfield Boulevard and the Charleston County line, and 25,500 between North Main Street and Crowfield Boulevard. Frost Law Group pursues Berkeley County car crash claims along roads like these.

Side Roads Between Ladson Road and the Dorchester Line

Several secondary roads in SCDOT's Charleston County file run from Ladson Road to the Dorchester County line. S-1120 carried 17,200 vehicles a day on that run in 2024, and S-881 carried 11,100. Another connector, S-2421, links Ladson Road with US 78 and carried 14,400. A driver can cross from one county's jurisdiction into another's within a single trip on these roads, so the report's location entry matters.

The Fact Book's 2024 list of Dorchester County's most crash-prone intersections includes S-230 at SC-642, where Ladson Road meets Dorchester Road, with 49 collisions. That junction sits on the Dorchester side of Ladson Road, and a wreck there becomes a Dorchester County file. Also on that side, S-517 runs from Ladson Road to Old Trolley Road and carried 16,400 vehicles a day.

College Park Road From Crowfield Boulevard to the County Line

The Fact Book's Berkeley list of busiest crash roads includes S-62 with 294 collisions in 2024, 3 of them fatal. Another S-62 junction, with a cross route SCDOT's file leaves unnamed, logged 62 collisions and 2 fatal crashes. Both are countywide rankings. Picture a driver near the interchange who holds a phone to read a text and drifts into another car. Section 56-5-3890, rewritten by 2025 Act No. 40, took effect in its new form on September 1, 2025. It bars holding or supporting a mobile device, or reading a text, while driving on a public highway. Watching a video on the device is barred as well. The officer may not view the phone for that offense, so the report may say nothing about it.

Interstate 26 Between College Park Road and US 78

I-26 between College Park Road and US 78, University Boulevard, carried an estimated 107,600 vehicles daily in 2024. On the neighboring segment, between North Main Street and College Park Road, the estimate was 89,700. SCDOT numbers the College Park Road interchange as Exit 203. The Fact Book put I-26 at S-62, that junction, at the head of Berkeley County's 2024 intersection list, with 113 collisions. That ranking covers the county as a whole, and a Ladson claim needs the report's own location entries. Across Berkeley County, I-26 logged 460 collisions in 2024, 2 of them fatal.

US 78 Through the Charleston County Part of Ladson

In 2024, US 78 carried 46,200 vehicles a day from Ladson Road to I-26. The approach segment that ends at Ladson Road carried only 16,200. Charleston County's Fact Book pages list US-78 among the county's five busiest crash roads, with 534 collisions and 3 fatal ones. They also rank I-26 at US-78 first among Charleston County intersections, at 190 collisions. Those are countywide figures, so Frost Law Group can use them only as background, never as Ladson totals.

Who Pays When Several Cars Collide on I-26?

Picture a four-car chain collision in heavy interstate traffic. Section 15-38-15 has worked the same way on one point since July 1, 2005. A defendant found less than 50% at fault pays only its own share of the damages. Once a defendant's share hits 50% or more, that defendant may still be responsible for everything. For claims arising after January 1, 2026, or accruing after that date, Act No. 42 of 2025 changed whose fault the jury weighs. The jury may now count a wrongdoer nobody sued, if the defense discloses that person within 180 days after the suit begins, absent good cause for a later disclosure.

The same Act dropped the older exceptions that left grossly negligent defendants, and those whose conduct involved alcohol, liable for everything. Willful, wanton, reckless or intentional conduct and illegal drug conduct still carry full liability. How a jury might split fault among four drivers depends on the evidence from that crash, and no lawyer can forecast the split.

Getting Sheriff, Highway Patrol or City Police Reports Through a Ladson Injury Lawyer

Section 56-5-1260 decides where a driver's first call goes after a crash that hurts or kills someone. Inside municipal limits, the notice belongs with that municipality's police department. Beyond those limits, a sheriff's office or the closest Highway Patrol office is the proper recipient. Ladson has no town government, so no Ladson police department exists to take the call.

The two counties Ladson spans divide crash work in opposite ways. In Berkeley County, the Highway Patrol investigated 3,468 collisions in 2024 against the Sheriff's Office's 88. In Charleston County, the Sheriff's Office investigated 2,282 and the Highway Patrol 1,497. Those are countywide totals, yet they explain why a lawyer confirms the agency before requesting any report.

Troopers From Post A on Both Sides of the Line

Highway Patrol Troop Six covers Berkeley and Charleston counties through Post A. That post works from 2070 Northbrook Boulevard in North Charleston, the same address as the troop's headquarters. Troop Six as a whole covers Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester and Jasper counties. So a trooper's report from either part of Ladson comes out of the same post. A Dorchester County address with a Ladson ZIP falls under Post B instead, which covers Dorchester and Colleton counties.

Deputies and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office

In the Charleston County part of Ladson, a county deputy may be the one who arrives. At the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, Jack C. Frost worked his way up from deputy to master deputy and then detective, after beginning as an officer and corporal in Summerville. He knows how a deputy's narrative and diagram come together. That background gives clients no special access to the agency. It does help him study a deputy's file with care.

Across Charleston County in 2024, the Sheriff's Office worked collisions that included 22 fatal crashes and 71 people seriously injured. The same agency also shows up in Berkeley County's table, with 14 collisions there. The agency line on a report, not the county on the envelope, tells a lawyer which office to ask.

When a Crash Happens Inside a City's Limits

A Ladson mailing address does not rule out a city. A census-designated place leaves out incorporated land by definition, and nearby cities have their own police. When a wreck happens inside a city's limits, that city's police department is usually the agency the driver must notify. Town and city departments can also work crashes in more than one county. Summerville's police department, for one, investigated 1,321 collisions in Dorchester County in 2024, plus 416 in Berkeley and 21 in Charleston. The report number and the agency named on it show which records office holds the file.

Getting the Report Once the Agency Is Known

After the agency is clear, the copy request follows. SCDMV holds officer reports from every agency, and each driver also leaves the scene with an insurance form that carries its own deadline. Frost Law Group can order the report and remind a client of the FR-10 deadline. A deputy's report and a trooper's report both reach SCDMV the same way.

SCDMV Copies of Deputy and Trooper Reports

For $10 a report, SCDMV provides copies of officer collision reports online, at a branch office or through a mailed Form FR-50. One state source serves a Berkeley deputy's report, a Charleston deputy's report and a Post A trooper's report alike. That matters on the Berkeley side. The Sheriff's posted records page speaks of incident reports and never of collision reports.

The FR-10 and Its 15-Day Clock

After a qualifying crash, the investigating officer hands each driver or owner an FR-10. The driver or owner then has 15 days, counted from that handoff, to send the completed and verified form back to SCDMV under Section 56-9-350. An unreturned form can serve as prima facie evidence of an uninsured car, meaning proof that holds up unless someone rebuts it.

Which Troop Post Hands Out a Ladson FR-10

In Highway Patrol usage, the FR-10 is the mandatory insurance verification form. On the Berkeley and Charleston sides of Ladson, a trooper who hands one over works out of Post A. A crash at a Ladson ZIP address in Dorchester County falls under Post B. So two wrecks on Ladson Road, one on each side of the Dorchester line, can involve different posts.

Proof of Coverage, Not a Finding of Fault

The FR-10 concerns proof of insurance, not fault. Section 56-9-350 puts the return on the driver or owner, whoever caused the wreck. A timely return avoids the inference that the car had no coverage. Keeping a copy of the completed form shows when it went back to SCDMV.

Emergency Care Near Ladson and the Records a Car Crash Attorney Collects

Which hospital holds the records a Ladson claim will need? The answer depends on where you were actually treated, and the county line plays no part in it. Four facilities around Ladson carry three different county answers, and each keeps its own chart and billing office. Frost Law Group can gather charts from each one a client visits.

Mailing addresses make the list harder to read. Two of the four have Summerville addresses but sit in Berkeley County. Trident has a Charleston mailing address but sits inside North Charleston. That mismatch matters only for record requests, since a chart's location does not move the claim to another county or courthouse.

Hospitals and Freestanding Emergency Rooms Around Ladson

A records request has to name the right facility, the dates of care and the patient. A lawyer sends a separate request to each place, since each one answers only for its own chart. Freestanding emergency rooms count too, even though they are not hospitals. The four facilities differ in size, in county and in trauma status, and only one carries a trauma designation.

Trident Hospital on Medical Plaza Drive

HCA Healthcare Trident Hospital stands at 9330 Medical Plaza Drive and describes itself as a 312-bed center with a 24-hour emergency room. Trident's own site gives the mailing city as Charleston. The Census Bureau's address lookup puts the hospital within the City of North Charleston, in that city's Charleston County portion. The state health department lists the same facility as Trident Medical Center, the name tied to its Adult Level II designation.

A Dorchester County Chart From Midland Parkway

HCA Healthcare Summerville Hospital, at 295 Midland Parkway, lies in the Town of Summerville in Dorchester County. It has 174 beds, a 24-hour emergency room and a pediatric ER with 10 beds of its own. The state trauma list does not include it. A Ladson patient treated there leaves a chart on file in Dorchester County, even after a Berkeley County crash.

Roper St. Francis Berkeley and the Brighton Park ER

Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital sits at 100 Callen Boulevard in Berkeley County, and it grew from 50 beds to 100 in an expansion. HCA Healthcare Brighton Park ER, listed by HCA as a part of Trident Hospital, is a freestanding ER at 1626 North Main Street. A Census Bureau address lookup places Brighton Park in Berkeley County, outside any incorporated place. Neither one appears on the state trauma list.

Charts for a Child Hurt in a Ladson Crash

A child's records may come from facilities with pediatric services. Summerville Hospital's pediatric ER is one, and Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital holds pediatric-ready accreditation for its emergency room. Section 15-3-40 can give a child extra time to sue, capped at one year after the child turns 18. A child's claim also follows its own rules on settlement approval, so Frost Law Group can request the child's charts separately from any adult's.

Ladson Car Wreck Lawyer Filings in Berkeley or Charleston County

A Ladson mailing address says little about which courthouse will hear the case. The Berkeley County Courthouse, whose address is 300-B California Avenue, sits in Moncks Corner. Berkeley County's page in the SC Judicial Branch courthouse search lists that courthouse in the Ninth Judicial Circuit. For a crash in the Charleston County portion, 100 Broad Street, home of the Charleston County Courthouse, is the usual choice, and the same circuit covers it.

The Charleston County Clerk of Court's office is at Suite 106 of 100 Broad Street. Both counties sit in the Ninth Circuit. So a Ladson case inside the census boundary stays in that circuit when the at-fault driver also lives in Berkeley or Charleston County. Frost Law Group also represents clients in Charleston County injury cases, so the firm can follow the claim to Broad Street. A Dorchester County address with a Ladson ZIP code is the exception. It leads toward St. George and the First Circuit, though a suit may also go to the at-fault driver's home county.

Can the Other Driver's Home County Decide Where Suit Is Filed?

Yes, it can. Against a driver who lives in South Carolina, Section 15-7-30 allows suit in that driver's home county at the time of the claim. The statute also permits the county where the bulk of the crash-causing conduct took place. Suppose a Goose Creek resident causes a wreck on US 78 in the Charleston County part of Ladson. The case could be tried in Berkeley County or in Charleston County, and Frost Law Group handles Goose Creek crash claims as well. If the at-fault driver lives outside South Carolina, the statute looks instead to where most of that conduct occurred or where the injured person lived.

Tickets, Magistrates and the $7,500 Line

The other driver's traffic ticket runs on its own track, apart from the injury claim. Depending on the agency, a ticket from the crash moves through a municipal court or a county magistrate. SC Courts states that municipal courts have no civil jurisdiction. Under Section 22-3-10, magistrates may take a civil case only when no more than $7,500 is in controversy, so a serious injury claim belongs in Common Pleas.

Three Years to Sue in Either County

The general injury deadline does not change at the county line. Section 15-3-530 allows three years in Berkeley and Charleston County alike, and Section 15-3-535 counts from when the claim was known or reasonably should have been. A county or state vehicle changes the timing. The Tort Claims Act allows two years to sue, measured under Section 15-78-110 from the day the loss surfaced or reasonably should have. Someone who first files a verified claim gets three years instead. That route has its own catch in Section 15-78-80(d), because the claim must land with the agency inside twelve months of that same day.
